Dark Souls 3 for PC is an action role-playing game set in a fantasy realm, marking the fourth installment in the series and serving as a direct continuation of its predecessor, Dark Souls 2. The narrative unfolds within the fictional Kingdom of Lothric, where a prolonged era of enlightenment is jeopardized by the impending Age of Dark. Players are tasked with preserving the Age of Fire by ensuring the First Flame continues to burn.
Game Overview
Players assume the role of the Ashen One, a character charged with the responsibility of 'linking' the First Flame to sustain its light. This flame is sustained through the sacrifices of valiant heroes and champions, who willingly offer their souls, thus becoming Lords of Cinder. This cycle of sacrifice has persisted unbroken from ancient times to the present. However, the Ashen One has failed to link the flame and is instead referred to as an Unkindled.
As the game begins, the Ashen One rises and embarks on a quest to restore Prince Lothric and the rebellious Lords of Cinder to their rightful thrones at Firelink Shrine. The flame is waning due to Prince Lothric's defiance of his fate, necessitating persuasion to fulfill his destiny.
Upon successfully returning the Lords of Cinder and the Prince, they proceed to the ruins of the Kiln of the First Flame. Following the defeat of the Soul of Cinder, players encounter four possible endings, which are elaborated upon below.
Combat, Treasures, and Weaponry
Throughout this journey, the Ashen One engages in combat utilizing a diverse array of weapons, including bows, swords, and throwable projectiles. Mastery of shields and evasive maneuvers is crucial for survival. Each weapon possesses a standard function and a special boost, which is a temporary enhanced state that must be used judiciously, as it has limited duration and requires time to recharge once exhausted.
The Ashen One will confront a variety of formidable foes, many of which embody the game's spectral and supernatural themes. Players should remain vigilant against skeletal hounds and other menacing creatures.
There are four potential endings after the Soul of Cinder has been defeated. They are as follows:
- Link the Flame: The player can attempt to link to the First Flame, ensuring that the Age of Fire will continue
- Summon the Fire Keeper: The Fire Keeper will extinguish the flame and the Age of Dark will begin in earnest
- Kill the Fire Keeper: This is much like the ending above, except after summoning the Fire Keeper, you kill her. Note: you will not receive any end game achievements for playing out this ending. The Fire Keeper will respawn as soon as you leave the area, so you can come back and try again
- Keep the Flame: The Ashen One can choose to keep the flame for themselves, an option which results in his becoming the Dark Lord of Londor
